Immigration #1
Critical threat
And off to the news!
The Associated Press Trump's immigration rhetoric makes inroads with some Democrats. That could be a concern for Biden
Roughly two-thirds of Americans now disapprove of how Biden is handling border security, including about 4 in 10 Democrats, 55% of Black adults and 73% of Hispanic adults, according to an Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll conducted in March.
New York Post James Carville warns of Democratic Party's ‘horrifying' numbers among young minority voters: ‘They're leaving in droves'
Similarly, the poll found 47% of Hispanics calling themselves Democrats and 35% identifying as Republican, whereas in 2021, 57% of Hispanics identified as Democrat and 26% said they were Republican.
A March New York Times and Siena College poll showed Trump, 77, leading Biden 46% to 40% among self-described Hispanic voters, and having the support of 23% of black registered voters.
The Washington Post Some important numbers on Biden's border problem
After three straight elections with Republicans trying and failing to turn illegal immigration into a political winner for them, a genuine border crisis means the issue looms larger than ever over President Biden's 2024 reelection campaign. Polls suggest it's his worst policy issue, with as many as 7 in 10 Americans disapproving of his handling of it.
But Republicans who have leaned too heavily on this issue have been stung before. And new polling injects some much-needed nuance into how this issue is playing.
The New York Times Yellen to Visit China for Top-Level Economic Talks
The official said that the two sides are expected to have 'frank' conversations about the Biden administration's concerns about the impact of China's excess industrial production on global supply chains for solar technology, electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries.
The Washington Post Nervous about November? Imagine being Biden's campaign manager.
Chavez Rodriguez is here in part because Black and Brown voters are essential ingredients in the victory recipe, and they've been souring on Biden. In 2020, Black voters chose Biden by 81 percentage points, according to an average of exit polls and other voter surveys; in a Post average of recent polls, Biden was up by 49 points among Black registered voters.
The campaign manager projects a calm confidence about November — saying Biden can win 'no matter who's on the ballot,' in reference to third-party candidates — while also saying that the campaign isn't taking anything for granted. Here in Arizona, for example, a March Fox News poll found Trump with four point-edge over Biden in a two-way contest.
New York Post Vote ‘blank' — not Biden — Working Families Party tells Dems ahead of New York primary
Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. for a primary race that has already been decided, with Biden and former President Donald Trump capturing enough delegates in previous primaries and caucuses to clinch their respective party's nominations for the general election. By law, New York must hold the primary anyway.
More problematic for Biden, the poll found that just 18% of self-identified Democrats approved of Israeli action in Gaza, down from 36% in November, while 75% disapproved.
New York Post Hooray for Speaker Mike Johnson and his bid to get Ukraine aid at last
That's why an overwhelming majority of Americans (60%, per an Associated Press-NORC poll last month) believe Washington has been sending Ukraine 'about the right amount' of aid, or even 'too little,' for its war effort.
New York Post 4 NYC boroughs lost more people since COVID than 40 of the largest US counties — with the Bronx topping list: study
A poll from the Citizens Budget Commission fewer than two weeks ago showed that just half of all New Yorkers plan to stay in the city over the next five years, and anger over quality of life has skyrocketed since the pandemic — with just 30% saying they're happy here.

The Hill Biden steps up efforts to court Haley voters
An Emerson College poll released last month found that 52 percent of Haley supporters voted for Biden in 2020. The same survey found that 63 percent of Haley supporters said they backed Biden after Haley ended her presidential bid, while only 27 percent said they would vote for Trump.
The Hill Here's where the polling stands in a 3-way race with Biden, Trump and RFK Jr.
Kennedy, the nephew of former President Kennedy, has been trying to gather signatures to get on the ballot in as many states as possible as he mounts an independent campaign for president. Although he has only gained enough signatures in about a half-dozen states so far, early polling shows that he may be the most likely third-party candidate to impact the race.
Kennedy has been averaging close to 10 percent in the polling average from The Hill/Decision Desk HQ, making him the highest polling third-party candidate in a presidential race since businessman Ross Perot in 1992. In a five-way race that includes Jill Stein and Cornel West, Kennedy is at 10 percent in the RealClearPolitics national average.

CNN Inside Biden's 2024 campaign media strategy that bypasses the Beltway press
In fact, Biden has engaged in a number of interviews this year, particularly with the Black and Hispanic press. Facing sagging poll numbers with Black Americans, Biden has granted at least 10 interviews with media outlets reaching the community this year, most of them with local radio stations during the drive time hours. Biden has also participated in two interviews with Hispanic radio outlets in 2024 and is set to sit down with Univision's Enrique Acevedo this week, Adrian Carrasquillo reported Monday for Vanity Fair.

China is the dominant player in batteries for electric vehicles and has a rapidly expanding auto industry that could challenge the world's established carmakers as it goes global.
The Hill Biden's EPA can justify his new EV rules only by cooking the books
Before federal regulations are implemented, they must be justified with an extensive analysis of costs and effects. The new Environmental Protection Agency rule forcing a massive shift toward electric vehicles is no exception. Weighing in at 1,181 pages, it is accompanied by an additional 884 pages of 'regulatory impact analysis.'
EPA says not to worry. If EV owners charge their vehicles when electricity demand is low, 'already low' recharging costs for EVs will be reduced even more, and 'the overall costs of electricity generation and delivery to all electricity rate payers, not just those charging electric vehicles' will be reduced. So just ignore the massive additional costs of the Biden administration's intended electricity transition to wind and solar technologies.

In the battery sector alone, companies have announced plans to build 44 major factories with the potential to produce enough battery cells to supply more than 10 million electric vehicles per year in 2030.
The challenge: These battery factories, and the electric vehicles they equip, are going to require a lot of electricity.

Regarding Steve Rodas' recent article about a lack of demand for fully electric vehicles at New Jersey dealerships, I think the piece missed another important reason why folks are not buying EVs in big numbers: a lack of charging stations.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution EPA says half of U.S. car sales in 2032 could be electric. What that means for Georgia
That is the likely and intended outcome of a new federal rule that will effectively limit the number of fossil fuel-powered passenger vehicles manufacturers can produce starting in 2027. The new tailpipe emission standards add regulatory pressure to a potent mix of incentives designed to push Americans toward electric vehicles, a shift that even critics say is inevitable.

European officials have expressed concern that a flood of low-priced Chinese-made electric vehicles could disrupt production and displace jobs in Europe. The EU is investigating whether Chinese government subsidies for EVs give an unfair advantage to Chinese auto exporters.
The Associated Press Collapse of NBA, NHL arena deal prompts recriminations, allegations of impropriety in Virginia
Leonsis' handshake deal with Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin to relocate the teams to a taxpayer-backed arena in Alexandria collapsed Wednesday, weeks after a bumpy slog of a defeat in the Virginia General Assembly. Leonsis, apparently not willing to wait for a second shot in Virginia, reemerged in Washington, which had offered his Monumental Sports & Entertainment a more than half-billion-dollar arena deal to stay.
'He mismanaged the process,' said Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, who had agreed to sponsor legislation underpinning the deal. The legislation called for a quasi-governmental entity to issue bonds to finance most of the project, repaid through a mix of projected tax revenues recaptured from the development. Surovell's bill never made it out of his own chamber — due to opposition from one of his colleagues, powerful budget committee chairwoman L. Louise Lucas — even though a companion bill passed the House of Delegates.
House Speaker Don Scott faulted the governor for bringing the Legislature into the conversation too late in the game.

For example, she pushed the BYU racism hoax. She also accused Winsome Sears, who is black, of being a white supremacist after her big election win in 2021. The Washington Post Pro sports in D.C. just got a reset. Now, what to do with it?
How this happened isn't as important as the fact that it happened. So put behind the blame — the mayor and D.C. Council for not proactively working on a deal to keep the teams downtown, Leonsis for his wandering eye, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) for not greasing the skids in the legislature for his Alexandria plan, the Virginia legislature for dropping a ball it didn't know would be handed to it — and concentrate on what matters, which is what's next.
